Parenting as spiritual practice is one of my favorite things to contemplate.

There is a study that one of my facebook friends has posted on a few times. Apparently, scientists have "found" that parents with small children are measurably less happy than people without kids but similar in other relevant ways (income, marital status, etc.) I have to admit, the study annoys me. It only tells half the story. Maezen talked about parenting as potentially leading (slowly, tantrum by tantrum) to self-transcendence. I agree, but I'd say it like this. For me, parenting has been about transcending my immature, selfish self and finding my powerful goddess self! There are so many inconveniences, discomforts, annoyances, humiliating moments, and fears involved in being a parent. Slowly, more and more I'm starting to take them with a grain of salt. Because I'm so much bigger, stronger, and more grounded now. And I think this is pretty darn cool and I'd trade it for, oh heck, about 85% of the "happiness" I used to enjoy. I would trade it? I have traded it. It's a fact. But I'm grateful.

Wow, I didn't intend for this to get so long. There was a lot of other stuff I loved from the post, like her thoughts on fear and the breath. Will be mulling that over for a while. I am fascinated by fear and the breath too!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1206415309518198493.post-6764897775558559462012-11-04T20:13:35.524-06:002012-11-04T20:13:35.524-06:00Beautiful.
